The first volume of Gruff79′s dark and violent look at Britain the the not too distant future; a Britain of crime, corruption, gang violence and brutality. With the law seemingly unable to cope, a new form of justice emerges …
I’m glad that there is a preview available online because,to be honest, these small books are murder to scan from. Also,it helps show what I mean regarding the art.
It’s crude artwork. Really, the anatomy is well off. But I have to say that how “bad” it looks depends on your view of comics. If “Gruf79″ is drawing for fun and to tell a story then, fair enough. The story is okay but in case you are asking “Who the hell is this guy?” here:
“Born in Oxford, England, Gruff79 was, until recently, a musician in the British Army. A passionate artist, he has produced a great deal of artwork in his spare time. Work began on Hiyama in 2003, following a conversation during which he was asked if he’d ever considered doing comic work, and the book has now grown to span 6 volumes. This dark, often violent portayal of Britain in the not too distant future has, pretty much, taken over his life. Gruff79 now lives in New Zealand.”
On his own blog,Gruff79 writes that he “enjoys drawing”. Don’t be put off because the artist has to enjoy what they draw and I think that is apparent here. Maybe I’m being spoilt by all the European books I get!
The production on the book itself is great with one exception. The covers are too dark. The cover above is from the website so “art & story by” is clear. I’ve been staring at the printed cover for ages and its just not clear enough. You need a much brighter text if lettering is going to be that small.
Am I wrong in thinking that Hiyama will not win any comic awards? Is that even being considered by Gruff79? I doubt it. He enjoys what he does and it’s in print. Isn’t that all that matters?

The year 2021, gangs and criminals dominate Britain, the police forces have no control of law and order, corruption is rife and crime levels are unprecedented.
2 years earlier one of the most powerful and violent gangs in the country was massacred by Mei Hiyama with the help of Assistant Commissioner John Torrent, and although no gang has taken over where Conner’s left off, Mei decides to start work with John again. Trailers & sample pages
Okay,I have to admit that, perhaps,I’m not reviewing this book as enthusiastically as some other reviewers are. Gruff79 is obviously enjoying himself as he continues to weave the story of a Britain with crime out of control and only two people willing to make a stand…violently!
As I wrote regarding volume 1,the art gets a little easier on the eye as you get into the story and the story is one you may have seen in numerous movies but without the ferocious budget and over the top explosions.
Check out the preview and see what you think.
