Spirou and Fantasio have won a million dollars and a trip to New York City. How lucky! Well, maybe not that lucky, since it’s all a plot by Don Cortizone to change his own fortune in his struggle against “The Mandarin”—by enlisting the help of truly lucky people. Before long, the two reporters find themselves in the middle of a shooting war between Italian Mafia and Chinese Triad–and they’ll have to make their own luck.
Spirou first saw print in 1938(?) and is still going strong world-wide. You don’t normally equate humour strips with a great deal of background detail but in this book there is scenery aplenty. It seems to be a European thing!
The “bigness” and clutter of New York City is on display here and on p.14 there is a partial view of a bridge but the detail on it is wonderful. And look at that airport scene on p.44! This is all helped along by incredible use of colour setting pace and scene. Oh,and the story is fun, too!
How do Spirou and Fantasio escape the tender mercies of the Mafia and Triad? Do you really think I’m going to tell you?!
One for Christmas.
